Petition

Lower the A426 speed limit to 40mph.

A petition from John Slinger MP and residents of Rugby, asking Warwickshire County Council to lower the speed limit on the A426 from 60mph to 40mph between M6 Junction 1 and the Kipling / Boughton Road roundabout. This would make the entire stretch of the A426 from the motorway 40mph.

Map of the A426 from M6 Junction 1 to the Kipling / Boughton Road roundabout, where John Slinger MP is proposing a 40mph limit in place of 60mph. South of that roundabout the road is already 40mph.
Illustrative map, not to scale.

What this petition says

  • 60mph is too fast for a road surrounded by homes, where people walk beside it and cross it every day.
  • The data shows that crashes occur on the approaches to the roundabouts.
  • Pulling out of the Eden Park roundabout, from the estate or the hotel, means joining a dual carriageway where traffic comes up and down the hill at 60mph or more.
  • Driving this stretch at 40mph rather than 60mph adds less than a minute.

What we are asking for

  • Warwickshire County Council to lower the speed limit on this stretch from 60mph to 40mph.
  • Safer approaches to the roundabouts, where crashes occur.

Local residents and councillors have raised serious concerns with me about the speed limit and dangerous driving on the A426 between M6 Junction 1 and the Kipling / Boughton Road roundabout. As a Rugby resident, I use this road daily.

The data shows that crashes occur on the approaches to the roundabouts, while pavements and crossing points are used by pedestrians throughout an area surrounded by homes. In these circumstances, a 60mph speed limit is simply too fast.

Anyone who has tried to pull out of the Eden Park roundabout, whether leaving the estate or the hotel, knows how hard it is with traffic coming down and up the hill at 60mph or more. It makes no sense for a roundabout serving a housing estate and a hotel to open straight onto a 60mph dual carriageway.

This is a particular concern for families and children who walk, cycle or travel to school along this route. Everyone should be able to use local roads safely and with confidence.

A lower limit would not make journeys noticeably longer. Driving this stretch at 40mph rather than 60mph adds less than a minute. Saving less than a minute is not worth the life of a single person.

I have raised these concerns with Warwickshire Police, Warwickshire County Council and National Highways. They have told me their view that a reduction in the speed limit may not be justified by the surrounding road environment. I do not believe this reflects the realities faced by local residents or the risks to pedestrians. I am therefore continuing to press for a review of the current speed limit and am working closely with your local Warwickshire County Councillors to make this case.

To achieve this, we need to show strong public support. Please add your name to the petition below. If you have seen a crash or had a near miss on this road, you can log it on this page too: every report strengthens the case I take to the council.

I have called a public meeting on Saturday 14 November to discuss this with the community. If you would like to come along, email my office at john.slinger.mp@parliament.uk and we will send you the details.

Together, we can send a clear message that action is needed to make this stretch of road safer for everyone.

The petition

We, the undersigned, call on Warwickshire County Council to lower the speed limit on the A426 from 60mph to 40mph between M6 Junction 1 and the Kipling / Boughton Road roundabout, so that everyone who lives beside this road, walks along it or crosses it can do so safely.
